Growing up in Nigeria, I never really used measurements while cooking. Every meal was custom made with using the one measuring tool at my disposal…my palm.
One of our most frequently asked question on 9jafoodie is regarding measurement cups and spoons sizes. Here is our attempt to clear things up.
Measurement Cups
“A ‘measuring cup’ or ‘measuring jug’ is a kitchen utensil used primarily to measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid cooking ingredients such as flour and sugar, especially for volumes from about 50 mL (2 fl oz) upwards. The cup will usually have a scale marked in cups and fractions of a cup, and often with fluid measure and weight of a selection of dry foodstuffs.” – Wiki
1 Cup = 250 ml (volume)
These are my measuring cups.
Measurements for dry ingredients may vary depending on ‘compresibility’ e.g. 1 cup of all-purpose flour sieved and leveled is approximately 100g while 1 cup of the same flour scooped is approximately 140g.
Ingredients like sugar are less compressible hence measurements have less variation.
Measuring spoons are pretty much the same. See volumes below.
1 teaspoon = 5 ml
1 tablespoon = 15 ml
So there you have it. When we state measurements in cups/spoons, you know what we mean!
ps. You can find measuring spoons and cups at your nearest supermarket.
I don’t have the standard measurements cup. I only use cowbell tin milk cup so how I do the measurements if I want to get 250g of flour?
Pls what measurement is 11/2 tsp of baking soda

What is a Cigar cup?
the cup I have in hand is the peak milk tin. How can be sure of my measurement and can I add egg to my dough for meat pie thanks
Chinwe
Invest in measuring cups. Peak milk tin varies. Read the label on the can for the volume and compare it to the standard measuring cup.
Please these measuring spoons and cups, are they metric, us, or imperial?
Thanks
Thanks alot for this post, words are not enough to say how glad that i am since i came across this site. Please i want to be the measurement that is used for the plantain puff puff recipe, you stated 1.5 cup flour. I want to know if it is half of the 100gram or 140gram because here you said that a cup of flour is 100 or 140grams. Please i want to know the value of the 1.5 cup flour that you used for the plantain puffpuff.
Thanks alot.
Hello, does it mean that 250grams of flour is the same as 250ml of flour. Most recipes are in grams and my measuring cups and spoons are in ml. How do I convert these?
hello! use this website for gram to ml conversion https://www.convertunits.com/from/grams/to/milliliters
Using the regular peak milk tin as mostly used in African homes, can you give measurements of cups equivalent to the peak milk tin? Thanks in anticipation.
I do not have one handy so I cant do a conversion. If I am to guess I will say a tin is about half a standard cup. 1 cup is 250ml.
Great work, Thanks for the useful information. my question is on the 1/3 cup size in the swallow section. Do you mean 1/3 before cooking or after cooking? Also, for 1 cup of rice, is it before or after cooking? Thank you
1/3 before cooking for swallow. uncooked cup in recipes. cooked cup on meal tables.
The cups we have in America are too small compare to what we have in Africa is so confusing
Thank you for your immense contributions to my kitchen success. Since I discovered your blog, I have been more confident in the kitchen
awwww that’s amazing Bola, happy to help.
