This beautiful lady is the proud owner of the natural hair salon Sisi Jacobs located in Kaduna. She is one of the most motivated people I have ever seen on the Lose It Nigerian program, I greatly admire her commitment to the LIN journey. I hope by reading her story, people will realize that no matter the effectiveness of a weightloss plan, what you get is what you put in.
Tomi physique reminds me of a few skinny-fat people I know. By just looking at her before and after photos , it’s not very clear how big she was . According to a study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, normal-weight people who have fat around their middle have a greater mortality risk than people who are overweight or obese with regular fat distributions.
Even though Tomi wasn’t overweight in the general sense of things, the type of abdominal fat she had placed her at a higher health risk than someone who might be visibly “fatter” . When it comes to measuring for health and wellness, don’t just use the number on the scale. Check your hip to waist ratio as well.
No matter what your weight is, always shoot for a ratio of less than .85 . If you find that you have excess abdominal fat, I highly encourage you to try the Lose It Nigerian belly blast challenge, it’s a great starter for abdominal fat loss.
Now unto Tomi’s interview, I hope you are all inspired.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where you live, what you do etc
I’m a semi-retired engineer operating a natural hair salon here in Kaduna where I’m based.
Tell us about the journey that brought you this far. Did you always struggle with your weight or is it a result of a life event?
I’ve always been on the slim side; I’ve never been more than a size 12. However, after I left university and started work, and settled into a bit more sedentary lifestyle and fast food options, I started to put on a bit of weight going from a size 8 to 10, and then above. I saw a picture of myself two years ago and was shocked; I had granny arms and a bulging stomach. I started to need spanx for my dresses. At that point, I embarked on a “say no to spanx” campaign.
How long have you been on this journey and how much weight have you lost
I started this journey, at 72kg in 2015 and I’ve gone up and down. I’ve lost 10kg till date, and weigh 61.6kg.
How would you say your diet needs are different as a Nigerian
My love for stews and soups as well as tending towards a heavy-carbohydrate diet made weight loss more challenging.
Do you think it’s possible to lose weight on a Nigerian diet
On the face of it, it seems impossible. However, I’ve learnt that by tweaking the method of meal preparation and minimizing fatty ingredients, it’s possible.
What has been your experience on the Lose It Nigerian Plan?
I’ve been on the Lose It Nigerian Program for 3 months and the experience has been amazing. I’ve learnt that I don’t have to sacrifice my meals because I want to lose weight. I can eat good yummy meals and still stay healthy. With the help of the challenges on the program and the support from the group, I lost 8kg, going down a dress size and some.
What is the one advice you have for anyone on the weightloss journey
Find a program that works for you, taking your unique dietary needs into consideration, because that’s where the battle is often won, and ensure it is something you enjoy, so you can be consistent.
